Oshtor (オシュトル) Is the protagonist of Monochrome Mobius and a major supporting character in Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception and Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth. He was Yamato's Imperial General of the Right in the period of the Yamatan Civil War. He excelled in both literary and military arts and was greatly trusted by the people. In order to interact with the citizenry in ways that his high station made difficult, he often assumed a disguise and the alias Ukon, concealing his true identity.

Appearance[]

Personality[]

Oshtor possessed a strong sense of justice. According to Nekone, he didn't trust people easily, but he immediately recognized the talent of Haku and Kuon and took a liking to the pair. He was firmly loyal to Yamato, willing to be executed for a crime of which he was innocent if it would maintain the peace of the realm.

During the events of Monochrome Mobius, he was portrayed as less wise than he was during his later years. For example, he was not above constantly quarreling with Mikazuchi and he often tried to childishly proclaim himself to be better than him. He was also more insecure and less serious than he would be later in his life, although he was still very formal and well meaning. He himself stated that his transformation into the strict ''Oshtor, Imperial General of the Right'' persona came about after donning his Aruturuka, which made him speak more seriously. During the events of Monochrome Mobius, he also learns to stop being overly formal by the Mikado, which is why his Ukon persona is more relaxed overall.

As Ukon, He was much more easy going, less formal and less work-focused. During a conversation with Haku, he states that he subconsciously always wanted to be more like Ukon, and less like General of the Right Oshtor.

Biography[]

Oshtor came from a low-ranking family that was noble only in name. Wanting to become a soldier like his father, he left his hometown and became a rank-and-file guard. He intended to return home after rising through the ranks, but instead was promoted to the Imperial General of the Right after his deeds caught the Mikado's attention.

Monochrome Mobius expands on his background. As he was planning to leave his hometown, he met a girl named Shunya, who claimed to be his father's, Pashpakur's, daughter. He learns that his father might still be alive in the far-away land known as Arva Shulan, which is not known to be on any map. He and Shunya arrive at Izumo, a place in the deadly desert to the west of Ennakamuy, where they meet Munechika and her mother, Murasame. After Murasame recognises Shunya's medallion to be Pashpakur's, they gain permission to cross the Pillar of Stars to Arva Shulan. With Munechika accompying them, they arrive at Arva Shulan. After coming to the place where Shunya last saw Pashpakur, they meet a mechanical, pink rabbit-like doll named Halu who asks Shunya if she is ''Chii''. With Halu now recognising Shunya as Chii and accompying them, they head deeper into the abandonned Onvitaikayan ruins where Shunya last saw her father. There, they encounter the bloodied mask of Pashpakur and his killer, Mayacowl. Mayacowl thoroughly defeats them and was close to killing them if not for Honoka intervering. After recovering, Oshtor, Shunya, Munechika and Halu head to the imperial capital. There, they meet Mikazuchi (who Oshtor spends a good 24 hours brawling with) and Dikotoma, their teacher who was appointed to them by the Mikado.

During their time as Dikotoma's students, Oshtor undergoes the trials to become a Raven. They encounter Maroro and Dekopompo during this time, among others.

Eventually, the people from Arva Shulan manage to break through the Pillar of Stars and attack the locals there. After fighting Narakfala, who torments Mikazuchi by illusions of his dead sister whom he killed, they reach Dikotoma, who is fighting against Mayacowl. Dikotoma loses his life, but not before handing his akuruka to Oshtor. Oshtor unlocks the mask's powers and forces Mayacowl and the other Arva Shulan forces to withdraw.

Afterwards, Oshtor does not accept the position of being one of the Eight Pillar Generals, nor does he accept the akuruka.

At the end of the game, when Arva Shulan invades the capital thanks to teleportation, Oshtor, Shunya, Munechika, Mikazuchi, Halu and Raiko head towards the depths of the mausoleum where they once again encounter Mayacowl. Mayacowl transforms into Aani-Kamaran, a hideous, ghastly monster. After defeating Mayacowl in his new state, he fuses with the arm of Quetzalcoatl, and becomes too strong for Oshtor and his friends to take on. Sensing a possible defeat, Raiko gives Mikazuchi his future Akuruka mask. Seeing his decision made, the Mikado gives Oshtor the mask of his mentor, Dikotoma. The two transform into Akuruturuka and defeat Mayacowl. The army of Arva Shulan, seeing that they have lost, retreat to their home. The Mikado appoints Oshtor and Mikazuchi to being Imperial Generals afterwards, telling them to look after his daughter Anju when he eventually dies, and to always protect the people of Yamato.

In the epilogue, after returning from a monster extermination mission, Oshtor sees Shunya drawing (These drawings are events that happen in the future, curiously of events that happen in Mask of Deception). Oshtor notices that Shunya is acting off and asks who she is. The girl responds that she doesn't have a true name, but that he can call her Tezcatlipoca.

An unknown amount of years later, Oshtor (as Ukon) meets Haku and Kuon and asks Haku to work for him. During Haku's stay at the Hakuroku inn, the two become great friends, with Oshtor lamenting his status as the rigid General of the Right and not being the free spirited Ukon. When Oshtor finds out that Haku pranked Nekone by pretending to be her brother, and how Nekone didn't suspect a thing, he gets the idea of Haku being a possible body double.

Later, when Uzurusha invades Yamato, Oshtor heads to the battlefield taking place and manages to defeat a high ranking commander, father of Entua.

When the Mikado is said to be assassinated and Anju is poisoned, the perpretator puts the blame on Oshtor and he is put in jail. After Haku and his allies manage to break him out, they, along with the mute and powerless Anju, head to Oshtor's country of Ennakamuy. During their voyage however, they are stopped by Vurai, who is convinced that Oshtor is responsible for the Mikado's death. During their fight, where they have transformed themselves with their arukurukas, Nekone (who is followed by Haku who was watching over her) screams her brother's name. With this moment of surprise and hesitation, Vurai lands a lethal blow against Oshtor. Before he dies, Oshtor manages to throw Vurai into a river. With his dying breaths, he asks Haku to don his mask and make sure to always keep the princess safe.

He makes one last appearence near the end of Mask of Truth, where he, along with another fallen comrade, convince Haku to return to the land of the living and gave him the mask of Hakuowlo.

Relationships[]

Haku - Ukon befriended Haku after seeing him fix a water wheel. He quickly grew fond of the kid and guided him like an older brother, finding him very interesting. While he enjoyed messing with Haku, he trusted him so implicitly that on his deathbed, he entrusted Haku with his mask and his legacy: to take over his identity as the General of the Right and protect Anju during Yamato's civil war. And even beyond death, Oshtor gave Haku the strength to carry on on the name and keep going, even providing Hakuowlo's mask in the afterlife.

Nekone - His younger sister for whom he cared very much. He loved to tease her, even when she demonstrated a bossy attitude.

Shunya: Pashpakur's adoptive daughter, and thus his adoptive sister. The two bond over the course of their search for Pashpakur and their stay at Dikotoma's mansion. Oshtor fully sees her as a part of his family, despite Shunya's fear of not being true family of his. Shunya possesses romantic feelings for him, which he seemingly is unaware of.

Mikazuchi - Friend, rival, and fellow general. The two always competed with each other yet were greatly trusted by the people; together, they were known as the Twin Shields of Yamato. They had even known each other long before becoming generals, alongside Munechika.

Halu: Shunya's ''protector'', in essence a sort of older brother figure to her. He gets along very well with Halu and enjoys drinking with him. Their relationship is very similar to his and Haku's.

Dikotoma: one of the Eight Pillar Generals and his master. He looked up to him greatly and enjoyed the time he spent drinking with him along with Mikazuchi.

Vurai - One of the Eight Pillar Generals, Oshtor's strength seemed to rival his. Both respected and admired their strengths and were very similar until Vurai attempted to become emperor of Yamato, resulting in the two fighting in their Akuruturuka forms.

Munechika - Another of the Eight Pillar Generals. Munechika and Oshtor, along with Mikazuchi, have known each other for a long time before they became generals of their own right. Oshtor trusts Munechika greatly to the point he told her about his involvement with Haku.

The Mikado: It was the emperor himself who taught Oshtor to relax and create the Ukon persona. He, along with Mikazuchi, were sometimes asked by the Mikado's alternate persona Mito to join him to drink. Oshtor greatly respected the Mikado and took his command to protect the princess Anju very seriously.

Anju: The Mikado's daughter. During his time at Dikotoma's student, he and his fellow students (plus Halu) would sometimes be tasked to comply with Anju's wishes, most of which were of casual nature, such as hide and seek and making a present for her father. After pledging to be the General of the right, he had the task of always keeping Anju safe. Years later, when Haku is awoken, he is still caring for Anju and listening to her request. Anju has developed a precocious crush on him by this point.

Trivia[]

  • His undercover alias, "Ukon", was taken from the first part of the Imperial General of the Right (右近衛大将 Ukonoe Taishou)
  • While it is indicated in the anime that he does not tend to trust people easily, he comes to befriend Haku almost immediately after meeting him
  • His quick trust in Haku might be because Haku possesses the same personality as Halu did.
